The Niagara Falls Country Club Celebrates 125 Years

1900

On June 17, 1900, with the organization of the Club and construction of the 9-hole course, the city of Niagara Falls had its first golf course (course was laid out in what is now Hyde Park). On May 10, 1901, the Club charter was accepted by the NYS Secretary of State formally establishing the date of the Niagara Falls Country Club’s founding.

1917

In 1917, the move from Niagara Falls to Lewiston began. A partnership including Pual Schoellkopf, Frank Ad. Dudley & Alfred W. Gray revealed plans to contrast an 18-hole golf course with an elaborate clubhouse that would sit on 272 acres of land and included the entire escarpment. Among the first sustaining members of Mountain View Development Company were a number of notable individuals: Mr. Dudley, Mr. Gray, much of the Schoellkopf family, Peter and Alexander Porter, the Olmsteads of Buffalo, and the Wurlitzers and DeGraffs of North Tonawanda.

1919

On May 10, 1919, the new home of the Niagara Falls Country Club formally opened its doors. The opening was reported to have been a great success with dinner, music and dancing. At the time of opening, 9 holes were available for play and were deemed to, “compare favorably with the best in the country”. The full 18-hole course would then open on June 1, 1919.

1938

In 1938, Robert Trent Jones, made Niagara Falls Country Club the fourteenth course he either designed or redesigned. In addition to our own, he subsequently worked on Augusta National, Winged Foot, Baltusrol, Oak Hill, Burning Tree and many more. He was recognized as the greatest golf course designer of the 20th century.
